The theme of Zuni Theatre Season 2023 is ”Theater is Gourd“, which implies good luck and different possibilities. The inspiration comes from a Cantonese slang phrase: ”What kind of medicine is sold in the gourd?“ describing people as mysterious and unpredictable. This year, Zuni will experiment with different themes using art and technology and hopes to present surprising theater experiences, much like the mystical treasures found inside a gourd.

In the past few years, due to the pandemic, theatres have been under restrictions. To overcome the limitations of performance venues, Zuni experimented with various art and technology. As we enter 2023, with the easing of the pandemic, Zuni will continue to use artistic technology to bring exciting works to the audience.

Mathias Woo, Zuni’s Co-Artistic Director, believes that there are many interesting things in Chinese culture, such as the gourd symbolizing auspiciousness. This year, Zuni Theatre Season takes on the theme of “Theatre is a Gourd,” using the gourd as a metaphor for theatre’s flexibility and versatility.

This year, Zuni are pleased to have invited Taiwanese graphic designer, Lee Ken-tsai, to design the key visual for “Theatre is Gourd”.

These four (images) represent ‘joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness’, inspired by the sounds and music of different theaters, conveying various emotional changes…

Taking into consideration the use of visuals, Lee Ken-tsai used the shape and color of a gourd to design the contours of these logos, with the brown area being able to be replaced by images or videos, symbolizing the inseparable relationship between “joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness” and the theatre, and providing more space for creative use.

Associate Professor at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and Regional, Representative of the New York Art Directors Club and New York Type Directors Club. Graphic Designer of Zuni Season 2021 and “Zuni 40” in 2022.

He wins the TDC Awards 2022 – Communication Design with The Tao of Fashion poster design. The design has been selected by The Type Directors Club to receive the “Certificate of Excellence” and as one of the winners of “The World’s Best Typography”.
