Mathias Woo’s detective theatre production, “13.67,” has garnered widespread acclaim since its premiere in 2022. In 2025, Zuni introduced the Arts-Tech-upgraded version, “13.67” 2.0, which consistently saw full houses and received ongoing acclaim. The production incorporates hit songs from different eras to evoke collective memories of Hong Kong, seamlessly blending past culture into a vivid urban crime story, guiding the audience to experience the evolving dynamics of society through theatre.
Collaborating with local comic artist Lai Tat Tat Wing, the production integrates Hong Kong-style anime aesthetics into theatrical technology, constructing an immersive mystery theatre space. It further features a cross-disciplinary performance by rising Cantonese Opera actress Wong On Ching, who breaks away from traditional vocal styles to take on the role of a “vengeful songstress,” breathing new life into the character.
In 2026, Zuni rewards anticipating fans with “13.67” 2.1, reconstructing the exceptional production with enhanced stage design and Art Tech, inviting the audience on a special immersive journey.
The production is an adaptation of Chan Ho-kei’s bestselling crime novel The Borrowed, which was initially published in Chinese as 13.67 and has captivated readers worldwide. In Japan, the novel was ranked first in both the Honkaku Mystery Best 10 (Foreign Sections) and the Shūkan Bunshun Mystery Best 10 (Foreign Sections) in 2017.
With rights sold to 12 countries, including the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea, The Borrowed (13.67) set a record for the fastest sale of rights in Chinese literature, becoming one of the few Chinese mystery novels to break into the international market. Its film rights were even acquired by renowned film director Wong Kar-wai for a future adaptation.
Author Chan Ho Kei uses “orthodox” mystery techniques to weave a series of brilliant suspense cases and complex enigmas. At the same time, the story cleverly uses a reverse narrative, beginning with the ending in 2013 down the history tunnel, landing on a finale in early 1967.
“13.67” is also a “biography of the city” dedicated to Hong Kong. It depicts major historical events in Hong Kong society from 1967 to 2013, such as scenes of the city littered with improvised explosive devices during the 1967 riot, and the ICAC’s crackdown on corrupt police officers. Through discussing crime and truth, the book explores the changes and constants of justice, systems, and human nature within the torrent of time.
