Mathias Woo Arts Tech Theatre, the highly acclaimed 13.67, returns in 2025 reinterpreted with cutting-edge art technology. Since its 2022 debut, 13.67 has captivated audiences with its distinctive immersive projections and soundscapes, vividly portraying Hong Kong’s past crime stories and social dynamics.
13.67 2.0 pushes the boundaries even further. Featuring a brand-new art-tech design, the production seamlessly integrates the unique Hong Kong-style comic art of Lai Tat Wing into the narrative for a deeper immersive experience. Adding to the innovative blend, promising Cantonese opera actress Wong On-ching makes her theatrical debut, injecting fresh vitality into the characters.
More than a sensory spectacle, 13.67 2.0 is a deep reflection on Hong Kong’s evolving society. Prepare to be transported by the immersive experience.
The production is an adaptation of Chan Ho-kei’s bestselling crime novel The Borrowed, which was initially published in Chinese as 13.67 and has captivated readers worldwide. In Japan, the novel was ranked first in both the Honkaku Mystery Best 10 (Foreign Sections) and the Shūkan Bunshun Mystery Best 10 (Foreign Sections) in 2017.
With rights sold to 12 countries, including the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea, The Borrowed (13.67) set a record for the fastest sale of rights in Chinese literature, becoming one of the few Chinese mystery novels to break into the international market. Its film rights were even acquired by renowned film director Wong Kar-wai for a future adaptation.
Chan Ho-kei masterfully employs “Honkaku” mystery techniques to weave intricate cases and complex puzzles. At the same time, 13.67 subtly portrays significant historical events in Hong Kong from 1967 to 2013, such as the 1967 riots with “pineapples” (bombs) scattered across the streets, and the crackdown on corrupt police officers by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). These details resonate deeply with Hong Kong readers.
13.67 is also a bestseller in Japan. Chan Ho-kei believes its success stems from the novel’s setting, which surprised Japanese readers. “They were unfamiliar with this period of Hong Kong’s history,” he explains, “unaware that in the 1960s and 70s, Hong Kong people, like the Japanese, were also experiencing a vibrant era, with ideological struggles.”
