Lai Chi WOW! wins multiple awards and nominations!

We are very honored that the Countryside Cultural Innovation Project – Lai Chi Wo Children Play Theatre Lai Chi WOW! received great reviews after its performance in 2022 and won numerous awards and nominations in 2023.

The performance won the Taiwan Golden Pin Design Award in the spatial design category, and was also nominated in the final six for the 2023 ABTT Stephen Joseph Award in the UK, representing Hong Kong on the international stage to exchange innovative concepts and practices in children’s theater with the cultural environment in Europe. In March 2023, Lai Chi WOW! was also recommended by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and selected for the nomination list of the 5th UIA Golden Cubes Awards by the International Union of Architects, which aims to recognize projects that contribute to children’s understanding of architecture and the environment.

Lai Chi Wo has a very long history and rich ecological environment. Zuni enhances interactivity and participation through theatre, amusement facilities, AR, and guided tours.

The Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) revealed the winner and the shortlisted theatre groups on 11 December, 2023. Zuni Children Play Theatre Lai Chi WOW! stood out from other submissions and was shortlisted alongside four other British theatres!

“We (the Award Panel) were especially impressed by the company’s commitment to creating innovative, participatory and fun theatre environments for children to learn about the natural world, and especially its production of Lai Chi WOW!” said Tony Jackson, the Chair of the SJA Panel @ABTT.
The Golden Pin Design Award

Established in 1981, Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award is the most influential design award in the global Huaren market. The planning and handling of the awards, the prize-giving ceremony, and all other related events are executed by Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI). In 2015, the Golden Pin Design Award launched three separate award competitions – the Golden Pin Design Award, the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, and the Young Pin Design Award. While each award targets a different demographic, the purpose of each is to commend outstanding innovation in design.

Paying tribute to the legacy of Stephen Joseph, a leading British theatre pioneer and a founding member of ABTT, the aim of the prestigious award is to acknowledge a plethora of approaches adopted by contemporary theatre practitioners as they continue to push boundaries and engage their audiences with ground-breaking performances.

Children Play Theatre at Lai Chi Wo, funded by the Environmental Protection Department’s Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme. Zuni curates a play theatre with Arts Tech comprising immersive sound and projections. With playful setups and songs, Zuni introduces the history, agriculture customs, the 24 traditional climatic celebrations, Lai Chi Wo’s ecology and the process of re-cultivation. Our “Four Mascots of Lai Chi Wo”, the Orange-tailed Midget (dragonfly), Plain Hedge Blue (butterfly), Chinese Bullfrog (frog) and Rice Fish would be gather together to understand the rural area, its crops and its environment.

Making Of Lai Chi WOW!

In December 2022, Zuni brought a children play theatre and a bamboo playground to Lai Chi Wo, allowing families to play and learn more about the countryside in Hong Kong. From design concept to the relationship between art and children development.

In the feature, play theatre designers Mathias Woo and Wallace Chang share the design concept of Lai Chi WOW! and how the arts technology applied in it. Also, Lai Tat Tat Wing shares with us the origin of the “Four Mascots of Lai Chi Wo”, and Cedric Chan explains the creative process of the four songs.
