“I am setting out. Perhaps I’ll find another you, or maybe another version of myself.”
The Danny Yung Experimental Theatre — Meeting of the Gods: The School is a further development of the experimental traditional theatre series Meeting of the Gods, initiated by Danny Yung in the early 2000s. During the three-week Danny Yung Young Artist Academy, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary artists will lead students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, along with local young actors, showcasing the results of their collaborative exchanges in the performance. Through dialogue on traditional performing arts, participants will ignite inspiration in the theatre, embarking on a learning journey of dialectical thinking to explore the “future” of artistic development.
Exploration will take place through learning, using the stage as a tool for accumulating records. Creators will continuously analyse, critique, and reflect on the edges, insides and outsides, patterns, behaviours, and structures of the stage. In collaboration, they will inspire one another and stimulate thought, responding to their shared aspirations to be “cross-disciplinary,” marking the beginning of their preparation to “step out” of established theatre.

In 2005, Danny Yung organised the “Meeting of the Gods – Festival of Experimenting Traditions 2005“ inviting traditional Chinese theatre (xiqu) performers to participate in exchanges and artistic performances. At the same time, the “Experimental Tradition” research and development project was launched in parallel.
“Each time we met, it would be like looking into the mirror; and everything reflected from it could all be the future audience who had been performers, and vice versa, that is performers who would become audience in the future.
“Everybody is looking at/for the past and the future in the mirror, searching and transcending, mischievously changing the rules of the game into another legend of doing this doing that.” —An excerpt from “Meeting of Gods: Festival of Experimenting Traditions 2005” by Danny Yung (2005)
