Hua-yen Concert – Reveal Insights of Interbeing through Sounds

At the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, a live concert, Hua-Yen reveals Insights of Interbeing through Sounds. Mind and Light, the key words of Buddhist philosophy, are brought to life by Naamyam – the Cantonese narrative singing performance – reinterpreting the signature theme songs from the theatre series Hua-yen Sūtra: Minds as Skillful Painter, The Ten Directions Are But One Thought, Song of Meditation, etc. Hua-yen offers multiple interpretations of the ancient Siddhaṃ script through a live performance that includes the art forms of singing, chanting, Cantonese Naamyam, and a live band playing Chinese and Western music, giving shape to the Hua-yen Avatamsaka world with a diversity of sounds and lights.

    In one single thought
    In all places
    Looking over all
Mind and its nature are One

    All sentient beings
    Expounding all truths
    Comprehending all
Like one single drop of the ocean

    In one single hair pore
    Cut off all evil
    Skilful engagement with all
    Like one and only earth

One sun, one moon above four continents
    Attain all wisdom
    All in the ten directions
    Many is one

    Mind indestructible as diamond
    All-pervading mind, devoted and understanding
    Ocean-like mind of sentient beings
    Abandon the mind of rivalry

    Mind does not regress
Command the mind for rightful action
    Guided by a joyful mind
    Skilful use of one’s mind

    Mind always joyful and content
    A compassionate mind builds connection
    A jewel-like pure mind
Give rise to the bodhi mind

    Mind’s multitude of mental formations
A pure mind gives relief to others
Actions of body, speech and mind
    Immensely joyful mind

Welcome to all gathering here, let’s open our mind to some Buddhist philosophies, and tune our ears to listen in mindfulness.

May you all relax in a peaceful undefiled mind.

    Enjoying the pleasure of music,

May you immerse yourself in the Hua-yen serenity.

Quiet your mind, let go thoughts and emotions,

And think not of honour or disgrace.

Closely follow the light and enter the immense, righteous and all-pervading Hua-yen Buddhaverse.

The Hua-yen Buddhaverse is vast and boundless.

Shining all-pervading brilliance to reveal the thousand-petal lotus.

What is written in the Hua-yen Sutra?

It recorded the teachings of Shakyamuni unfolding Buddhist philosophy.

He had just attained ultimate enlightenment through perfect understanding of Emptiness and Form,

From all directions Bodhisattvas came instantly to pay homage to him.

Shakyamuni, appearing in the form of luminous lights,

Gorgeous and colourful, lighting up the entire sky.

Emanating from the luminosity, wondrous teachings are manifested,

Not a single word is used to impart the teachings.

Buddhist philosophy may seem too abstruse, like ephemeral mist hard to grasp,

One phrase can actually sum it all up, which is Causes and Conditions.

Everything is tied to Causes and Conditions, and their consequences,

Regardless of human beings or the Buddhas; Heaven or Earth.

If no colourful butterflies flutter their wings,

    How can we find bright red and purple blossoms all over the spring fields;

If living beings have no blazing desire to exist,

    Rare is their chance to be born in the worldly realms with flesh and blood jointly given by a father and a mother;

If there are no sentient beings calling for help to free themselves,

Even in the infinite Hua-yen Buddhaverse, the Buddha will not be found.

By the bridge you gaze at its arch basking in the new moon,

From upstairs you’re seen basking in the wind,

Deep into the moonlit night through roll-up curtains shines the moon,

A dream encounter among flowers under the moonlight.

All beings and things affect each other,

Following the law of the four states of phenomena: Formation, Existence, Destruction and Emptiness.

Everything is created by a complex of conditions,

Whether sad or happy; rich or poor.

Hence all living beings have no intrinsically fixed nature.

The concepts of “You, Me, Him” all point to Emptiness.

If one’s attachment to the concept of Ego is relinquished,

The mind will open up and become “Righteous and All-pervading”, never again letting darkness and ignorance prevail.

It’s like a painter spreading the various colours.

Delusion grasps different forms but the elements have no distinctions.

In the elements there’s no form, and no form in the elements.

And yet apart from the elements no form can be found.

In the mind there is no painting, in painting there is no mind.

Yet not apart from mind is any painting to be found.

That mind never stops, manifesting all forms,

Countless, inconceivably many, unknown to one another.

Just as a painter who doesn’t know his own mind,

Yet paints due to the mind, so is the nature of all things.

Mind is like an artist, able to paint the worlds.

The five clusters all are born thence; there’s nothing it doesn’t make.

As is the mind, so is the Buddha; As the Buddha, so living beings:

Know that Buddha and mind are in essence inexhaustible.

If people know the actions of mind create all the worlds,

They will see the Buddha and understand Buddha’s true nature.

Mind does not stay in the body, nor body stay in the mind:

Yet it’s able to perform Buddha-work freely, without precedent.

If people want to really know all Buddhas of all three periods of time,

They should contemplate the nature of the cosmos: All is but mental construction.

    of them, plenty of it.

Life is like a piece of bare paper on which the mind can paint its world.

In one colourful stroke, multiple worlds immersed deep and wide.

    You may catch the crescent moon resting in the calmness of the sky with light-toned strokes;

    Draw some flowers exuding delicate fragrances, and the moonlight casting shadows of the flowers;

    Depict some tragic stories about loyal lovers, bringing tears to many;

Sketch a deserted room under the cold moonlight.

Objects drawn can appear in different forms, but the paper remains the paper itself,

Yet if the paper is not there, traces of brush strokes cannot remain.

    In the elements there is no form; and in forms there is no element;

In the mind there is no painting; in painting there is no mind.

No elements then no forms, no mind thus no painting,

Hence everything is created by the mind, and with it follows the five skandhas.

When the mind is full of kind thoughts, actions are also kind,

The selfless wish to benefit the world with compassion grows strong,

Looking up, one only sees luminous lights,

And the world is manifested as a precious lotus.

If the mind is always full of dark thoughts, the deeds are also dark,

Dark reckless deeds lead steadily to decay and disintegration,

Looking up, one only finds burnt embers,

And a world ablaze with flames of destruction.

Intrinsically no unchanging self-entity exists in the world, only our mind creates the world and our place in it,

Simply one action one thought can cause waves surging in ten directions.

Bodhi and mirror, both are illusory,

To reach the state of Buddhahood, one need not see through the Buddha,

Need not go through tens of thousands of volumes of scriptures,

Need not be an ascetic, or tirelessly chanting mantras and scriptures.

Just taste simplicity and tranquility with a restful mind,

Take a penetrating view to see how a mountain is a mountain, and concurrently not a mountain,

Be mindful of our own mind and its thoughts, in the morning and evening,

Cradle a compassionate mind, and let it guide us across the mundanity of life.

Desperate yearning for enlightenment misguides practitioners into the trap of blind obsession,

The practice of non-practice nurtures a committed mind.

With unassuming diligence, myriads of difficulties are overcome,

At last one day when the cloud and mist dissipate,

The magnificent realm of the Hua-yen Buddhaverse can be seen, so stunning, so luminous in its richness of all colours.

The ten directions are but just one thought

    Darkness and light

Adorn like paintings, so that the eye can see

    Only the mind can create

Joy and resentment, gloom and brightness

All the way up to ultimate peace

So that dirt will not even tarnish the shadow

    Without obstruction and without dust

    Lead to deterioration and annihilation

    Only karma will be left

    By countless sentient beings

Be it Buddha nature or human nature

    All will be befittingly delivered

    From their moans and groans

    Where there is the Buddha

    There is the Sūtra

    There is also the Sūtra

    The fruit of Bodhi

    Was planted by a human

    To deliver this chaotic world

To the land of the Buddha

    The immense, righteous and

    All-pervading Buddha illuminates universally

While meditating on a grain of sand

Without attaching to the physical body and

Seeing that shapes and forms are but empty names

Names, one will be able to end destiny

    Millions of spacious sky towers

    Songs, dances and being merry

    Humankind gets attached

    To these illusory props

When clouds accumulate, they become rain

Rain will then illusively turn into snow

    And forget its shape

  • Hua-yen Sūtra

    +-

The Hua-yen Sūtra has various titles namely Flower Adornment Sutra, Dafangguang fo huayan jing (Pinyin), and AvataMsaka Sūtra (Sanskrit). It is an important Buddhist scripture that narrates the relationship between the mind and the world. The vision expressed in the Hua-yen Sūtra is the foundation upon which the Huayan School of Buddhism in China based their teachings. Believed to be the first Dharma teaching by the Buddha after his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, the Hua-yen Sūtra reveals the inconceivable and infinite worlds of the Buddha, the profound realisation of Dependent Origination, the transformation from mundane to saintly experiences, the various practicing stages of the Bodhisattva path en route to the attainment of Buddhahood. The Sūtra is a Dharma teaching delivered not through the media of languages, sounds of voices. Instead, the Buddha conducted the teaching using the symbol of lights. The lights radiated from his entire body inspired the bodhisattvas, gods and deities who attended the Dharma talk. Then it was elaborated and interpreted by Samantabhadra Bodhisattva via the various media of languages, writings, icons and images.
