Zhong Sicheng, author of Book of Ghosts, was a playwright of the Yuan dynasty. In the book, he documented the artists of his time and reflected upon their position in society — appearing and disappearing like ghosts, elusive yet ever-present.

In 2026, artists continue to navigate the intersections of politics, economics, and lived reality, constantly questioning the place of creation, the body, and existence itself. As the opening performance of the Meeting of Gods Festival, Book of Ghosts 2026 sees Danny Yung, Co-Artistic Director of Zuni Icosahedron, extending the imagination of the original text and tracing theatre back to its older origins: the altar, ritual, and the shared space once inhabited by humans, ghosts, and gods.

Book of Ghosts 2026 unfolds in two parts.

The first part takes place outdoors. Makoto Matsushima from Japan, Park Hobin from Korea, and Rady Nget from Cambodia each draw from ritual traditions, ceremonies, and embodied practices rooted in their respective cultures. Their performances explore the origins of theatre, invoke rites of exorcism and blessing, and contemplate peace through the body.

The second part moves into the theatre. Performers from Chinese traditional xiqu traditions present excerpts from Yang Junfeng’s Bie Dong and Xiao Xiangping’s Jingju-Kunqu-Kabuki work Remnant Moon. Through the ideas of crossing and role transformation, the works reflect on identity, the body, voice, and the frameworks of theatre itself.

In Book of Ghosts 2026, theatre becomes both altar and question.

We invite you to experience seven performances—seven distinct intercultural experiments.

Some sing, some dance, some remain silent, and some engage in debate. From theatre back to the present moment, from exchange and performance to dialogue.
