In 2005, Danny Yung organised the “Meeting of the Gods – Festival of Experimenting Traditions 2005“ inviting traditional Chinese theatre (xiqu) performers to participate in exchanges and artistic performances. At the same time, the “Experimental Tradition” research and development project was launched in parallel.

“Each time we met, it would be like looking into the mirror; and everything reflected from it could all be the future audience who had been performers, and vice versa, that is performers who would become audience in the future.

This is no gathering of legends or masters—simply a warm-up for intercultural exchange.

Meeting of Gods 2026 continues the questions raised in Book of Ghosts 2026 concerning the origins of theatre. Developed through workshops, rehearsals, and exchanges, the work gradually evolves into a live experiment that crosses cultures, regions, and artistic disciplines.

The performance brings together artists from Phnom Penh, Chongqing, Seoul, Stockholm, Tokyo,  Hong Kong, and Singapore: PARK Hobin, Rady NGET, Makoto MATSUSHIMA, together with Chinese Traditional Opera Performers —YANG Junfeng and XIAO Xiangping. Sharing the same theatrical space, they observe, learn from, and respond to one another. Beginning with their own bodies, voices, performance traditions, and cultural memories, they explore creative possibilities that move beyond mere crossing toward genuine integration.

The performance revolves around the themes of “ghosts” and “gods,” “ritual” and “education,” “the stage” and “public space.” Through brief texts and physical actions, the artists respond to questions concerning ghosts, gods, theatre, learning, and transcendence, revealing their individual understandings of performance, tradition, and contemporary realities.

The intercultural performance segments that follow—The Other Cave, Waning Moon, and Awakening—together with a final collective improvisation, reopen the possibility of theatre as a space for exchange. Dance, xiqu, sound, and improvisation permeate one another in real time, inviting audiences to reconsider how cultures generate new questions and relationships through encounter and collision.

Deposit: Free admission, a deposit of HKD $200 is required upon reservation.

Attendance Refund: For those who attend the performance on time, the refund will be processed within 30 working days afterwards.

After deducting a HKD $15 ticketing system administration fee, the actual amount refunded will be HKD $185.

Absence Policy: If one fails to attend, the HKD $200 deposit will be forfeited in full and will not be refunded.

There will be no intermission for this programme.

Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance.

Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted.
