Zhang Jianwei

Zhang Jianwei is a renowned Chinese writer, screenwriter, and journalist. He is one of the rare individuals to win both the Fan Changjiang Journalism Award (China's highest honor in journalism) and the Lu Xun Literary Prize (one of China's top literary honors). A graduate of the Journalism Department at Renmin University of China, he served as an editor and bureau chief for the China Youth Daily, developing a profound capacity for social insight.

As an author, he has penned historical works such as Reviewing the Year of Wuxu, The Last Myth, and Exiled from the Forbidden City, earning a reputation for boldly questioning traditional historical narratives and capturing the true complexity of historical figures. In screenwriting, his representative works include epic historical television dramas such as Towards the Republic, The Qin Empire, Jin Yi Wei (The Imperial Guards), The Secret History of Yang Guifei, and Nurhaci. Notably, Towards the Republic broke away from one-dimensional historical portrayals, sparking massive public resonance and academic debate upon its broadcast, and is widely hailed as a milestone in Chinese television history. He is also the playwright who adapted Ray Huang's 1587, A Year of No Significance for the stage.
