In 1987, Zuni established the Art Education Unit for the purpose of promoting the development of local art education and organising different types of visual and performing arts education programmes. Over the part 30 years, Zuni organised various programmes to promote the understanding and participation of art in the community and school.

Exchange

Immediately after the group’s establishment, Zuni represented Hong Kong by appearing in the 1st Asian Theatre Festival and Conference held in Taipei. Zuni has become the primary force to advocate and develop Hong Kong’s international cultural exchange strategy and cross-regional network since then.

Danny Yung

An experimental art pioneer, Danny Yung is a founding member cum Co-Artistic Director of Zuni Icosahedron. Yung is widely regarded as most influential artist in Hong Kong and the neighbouring regions, and an advocate in experimental arts and new art forms.

In 2014, Yung is the laureate of the 2014 Fukuoka Prize – Arts and Cultural Prize. In 2009, Yung was conferred the Merit Cross of the Order of Merit on Ribbon by the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his contribution to the arts and cultural exchange between Germany and Hong Kong. In 2008, with Tears of Barren Hill he was honoured the Music Theatre NOW Award by UNESCO's International Theatre Institute. In 2022, Yung received the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Beginning in 1997, Yung has initiated several important cultural and arts networks. Among them are the Asia Arts Net, Asia Performing Arts Network, and World Culture Forum. The City-to-City Cultural Exchange Conference initiated by Yung has been held for more than 20 consecutive years, and is the premier and the only exchange program conducted among Chinese speaking regions and on a city-to-city basis.

In the past 40 years, he has been actively engaged in various fields of the arts, including theatre, film and video, comics, as well as visual and installation art. Yung has contributed significantly to the provision of a platform for both acclaimed and emerging artists to explore and carry out cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration. As director, scriptwriter, producer and stage designer, Yung has created over 100 theatrical productions, which have widely toured to over 30 cities in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Yung is the creator of cross-disciplined and cross-region Tian Tian Xiang Shang conceptual comics. TTXS has become an iconic figure in creative industry and education sector. It's exhibition and educational program have reached out to Europe, America and Asia. On- and off-stage, Yung is an enthusiastic protagonist for innovation in cultural policy, cultural exchange, institutional development and creative education.

Mathias Woo

As the co-artistic Director cum Executive Director of Zuni Icosahedron, Mathias Woo leads a career as a scriptwriter, director, producer as well as curator. His works con-struct aesthetics in theatre through strong visual images and have toured in cities around the world such as Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tokyo, Singapore, Taipei, Berlin, Brussels, Krakow, Milan. Woo's theatre works explore subjects as wide range as literature, history, current political affairs, architecture, and religion. His recent productions include Read Sing Eileen Chang at the Aranya Theatre Festival 2023, HK: A Theatre of Life and Death, Bach is Heart Sutra, Hua-Yen Sutra, 1587, A Year of No Significance, Eighteen Springs, East Wing West Wing Series, Tang Xianzu's Dream on Dreams, A Tale of the Forbidden City, Multi-media Architectural Music Theatre Series - The Life and Times of Louis I. Kahn, and Looking for Mies. In charge of multimedia stage design, Woo cooperated with various Chinese theatrical masters, namely, Stan Lai, Edward Lam, Meng Jing-hui and more.

In 2009, Woo initiated and curated Architecture is Art Festival, the first of its kind themed on architecture in Hong Kong. Through theatrical performances, exhibitions, talks, conferences and other art forms, the festival showed levels of knowledge, aesthetics and brought about critical thinking and discussions. Since 2017, Woo curated and designed the Z Innovation Lab that focused on integrating the latest stage technology and innovative ideas.

In 2012, Mathias with Looking for Mies was awarded the Hong Kong Design Centre DFA Merit Award. In 2013, Woo was awarded the Arts and Cultural Figure of the Year in Shenzhen and Hong Kong Lifestyle Award by Southern Metropolitan Daily. His work The Architecture of The City has received DFA Design for Asia Awards 2018 – Silver Award and Silver A' Design Award in Performing Arts, Style and Scenery Design Category in 2019. With Z Innovation Lab 2019, he has also received the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2020. In 2021, his work Bach is Heart Sutra garnered the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2021 – Merit Award.
