  • About Rebecca Pan

Rebecca Pan was 27 when she made her debut appearance on stage in 1957.  Her first album “Pan Wan Ching Sings the Four Seasons” made at the age of 29.

Pan is a pioneering artist in many ways:

    –        Being the first artist to adapt English lyrics into Chinese tunes.  “Ding Dong Song” and “Kowloon Hong Kong” became the tours de force among those works.

    –        Being the first Chinese touring artist whose footprints were found all over the main cities of Europe, America and the Middle East.

    –        In 1964, Pan signed to EMI London, became the first Hong Kong singer to sign with an overseas record company.

    –        Pan is the first Hong Kong singer to have a fan club.

    –        In 1966, she was chosen to be filmed in the documentary East West Island produced by the British telecommunications company Cable and Wireless to promote Hong Kong tourism.  The theme song “My Hong Kong” became one of her signature works.

    –        Being one of the lead artists of the variety live programme Enjoy Yourself Tonight when Hong Kong’s first wireless television TVB began broadcasting in 1967.

    –        In 1972, she produced Hong Kong’s first original Mandarin musical Pai Niang Niang with a budget of one million dollars.  It ran for 60 shows in the Princess Theatre.

Pan’s output dwindled in the 1980s but she was active again since her appearance in a Wong Kar-wai movie in 1990.  In the recent years, her collaboration projects with different young singers made her familiar and well-received by the new generations.

  • Introduction

In the 1960s, Rebecca Pan was nicknamed the Travelling Singer as she was frequently invited to perform overseas, in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, and elsewhere. She also took it as her duty to promote Hong Kong, introducing the Pearl of the Orient to foreign audiences in her songs. At that time, Hong Kong was a place where Eastern and Western cultures converged and influenced each other. This was most palpable in the entertainment and performing industries where Chinese works often adopted Western styles . This unique cultural background also gave birth to a special musical genre in which Rebecca Pan was the most distinguished performer, singing English songs which had been adapted and arranged in a Chinese way, with both English and Chinese lyrics and musical instruments from East and West.

Her Ding Dong SongMy Hong Kong and many other songs were all greatest hits of the time. Rebecca Pan also dared to be innovative and persistent in her pursuit of dreams. In the 1970s, she already self-financed and produced a Chinese musical Madame White Snake. Her courage and endurance inspired many young musicians who for years looked up to her as their iconic model.

The programme features singers Yoyo Sham, Eman Lam, On Chan@C AllStar,  Anthony Wong, Joyce Cheng, music director Edward Chan, text writer Pia Ho and narrator Karena Lam, paying tribute to Rebecca by performing a series of her famous songs, and re-discovering the musical journey of this iconic figure of Hong Kong.
